you’re so talented!

something i was reading this morning pointed me to matthew 25:14 and the parable of the talents.  you know the story.  a rich guy was leaving and he gave 3 of his employees some cash to invest while he was gone.  a little back-of-the-envelope math put the numbers at 2.5 million, 1 million, and half a million in 2008 US$.

so these were substantial amounts of cash!  i mean, if anyone wants to hook me up with any of those amounts i’m ok with it.  but then the second thing i saw was that this was 100% investment capital.  none of it was to for an abercrombie shopping spree and to beef up the college fund.  nada!  the story doesn’t say, but we can assume that since they worked for the rich guy their day-to-day was taken care of.

but the thing that’s really pointy about jesus’ story is the rich guy’s attitude when he came back.  he was totally uninterested in preservation of wealth.  he was looking for capital gains!  show me the cash!

there’s an american ideal that goes something like: “to really love someone you can’t have any expectations for them or conditions on what they do”.  of course, that’s straight-up garbage.  i mean, we learn how to love from god, and he definitely has some expectations and constraints on us.  hence the story.

the bad employee’s defense was that he was paralyzed by fear.  but the rich guy’s response was (i’m paraphrasing here): “oh yeah?  fear this!“.  here’s how my n.i.v. bible translates it:

throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth

now i don’t want to mess with your theology, but it doesn’t sound to me like he was putting him in time out.  best i can tell he sent him to hell because he had gifts to use for the kingdom of god and he didn’t use them.

“there is now no condemnation…” (romans 8:1).  but maybe there is a little conviction – at least for me!
